In the near future, an infectious and deadly disease appears in the city of Medburg. Whatever is causing it seems to be a mysterious new kind of organism. Emergency teams isolate the epidemic to Medburg, trapping 20,000 people in a containment zone that slowly descends into mayhem. Roderick Halkin and Cecily Sunday are unconventional scientists who must try to understand an unconventional microorganism that doesn't obey the laws of biology. Gary and Alicia Winters--Medburg teenagers with big dreams but not much else--struggle to stay alive. And the government faces a stark reality If everything in the containment zone dies, so does the microbe, while a single breach in the zone--and perhaps even a single survivor left inside--endangers the whole world.

This was a scary book on more than one level. First, the disease, of course. Second, the bureaucracy and ambitions of the individuals in charge of finding the solution to the disease. I have no doubt that in reality, people would be looking to cover their asses before worrying about the infected people and potential spread of the plague. There were also dedicated people risking their lives to solve the puzzle of this disease and they were the most interesting people in the book. Cecily is a very unique character who uses her intuition to solve problems, while Roderick is a brilliant scientist who relies only on knowledge and science. Kraig is the leader of the team and the one person who puts his ambition aside to help people.
The science in the story is interesting and creative and usually not over the head of the reader. The way this disease started is terrifying and the way it was investigated was suspenseful as it was a race against time. I found the science to be fascinating.
At first, I was frustrated with the people who were being quarantined. Didn't they want to do the right thing and save others from this contagion? Then I realized it was more a matter of not trusting the government to do the right thing and it was easier to understand. I think that's a major problem in the world today, especially in this country, and if this situation actually occurred, the results would be the same. The government has not proven itself to be trustworthy and how many people are just going to sit around waiting for congress to find an offset to the additional funding needed to solve this problem?
This will happen someday. I hope the government has its act together by then, but I really don't think it will.

Containment Kyle Kirkland 9780615750583 Books Reviews
Writing is for juveniles. Wish I had it to read when I was 14. Not very good for a 65 year old. Poor character development. Slow - no action.
What would really happen if we were overwhelmed by disease? How long would it take for an orderly town to turn into a no holds barred free for all? Read this to find out one perspective. You will be entertained.
I kept reading, thinking, Ok, we are getting to the good stuff, lots of anticipation for something that does not happened. It left me wondering what happened. Not the best written suspense ever.
Refreshingly new concept of a pathogenic killer - one I haven't read before in a medical thriller. Detailed medical descriptions make for a deeply interesting read and not just another shallow look at what could happen when things go horribly wrong. And mostly, thanks to the author for not making the heroine of the book a model-gorgeous, busty blonde!
Morality meets medical science, and I was completely addicted. I seriously spent a week sleep deprived because I would swear I'd only read one chapter per night, but read 2 or 3. Even if you don't have a medical science background, the book is enjoyable. If you DO have a background, it's all that much more exciting. I would leave class, come home, and read a chapter or two getting excited when the author got the science right.
Ok, you are going to read several reviews about how "sciency" this book is. Reports of its unreadable ness are HIGHLY exaggerated. I felt that it read like a very young Michael Crichton. Without two pages of one of the main characters explaining some obscure science fact about a butterfly in China. I really enjoyed reading this book, and look forward to reading more of his work and watching him grow.
Great book! And being an avid reader of everything from Dickens to Rowling to Koontz, (and many other writers of the world's best fiction) I don't usually give out such high praise. I like a book that keeps me turning pages late into the night, and yet isn't so complex that I have to re-read chapters to follow the story. I also like intriguing characters and believable dialogue. Mr. Kirkland delivers it all in this medical thriller, and I look forward to reading more of his imaginative and informative novels.
